Running Injury and Performance Follow Up

Podiatry Chesterfield

Following on from a Running Injury or Performance Platinum Assessment we shall discuss with you what we think is the link between how you are moving and the injury or performance issue that you have experienced. This could consist of a variety of things.

There is a very good chance of talking about the way you are running and now this is related to your own body. Our aim would to have found the compensations that your body has employed to over come some part of function that you were not able to do. It is these compensations that lead to overloading other structures and leading to the injury. Your injury occurs when these compensation patterns have run out of options.

We will discuss what needs to be done how this can happen.

There are some options.

Firstly if there is still an active injury we need to address this and we will discuss how this can be done. Options are:

Load management – this will include training, lifestyle, how to keep as active as possible without causing more damage.

Shockwave and manual therapy – these will help the healing process and restore good function back to tissues. This builds tolerance back into tissues so they can start to take more loading. These treatments not only work directly onto the tissues but also resetting your overactive injury protecting nervous system.

Orthoses – Insoles for your shoes. These come in a variety of options but we are generally using 3D printed devices that are used to help change the loading patterns on your body. We try to redirect the damaging forces into propulsive forces. Orthoses do not need to be used but can be helpful as they take away some of the active thought processes and allow your body to move in a new way guided by the orthoses. These new type of devices are very different to traditional rigid arch supports. How they work and how they can be made can be discussed if you want to go down this route.

Gait Retraining – you have to move differently and to do this we have to look at what we can change, how we can change it, the knock on effect, both positive and possibly negative. You would have seen how you are running and what we think the problem is. We can then work with you to change this. This is done by using specific exercises and running drills to show the body a new way to move. We have to establish new neural pathways and connections and it can be done. How much and how fast is different for everyone and sometimes a small change makes a big difference. You do not need to be biomechanically perfect, but you do need to do something different.
