New Running Assessment for Runners and Movers

What is New?

We have been lucky to secure a new room at The Glass Yard in Chesterfield and opening a new clinic which will offer a new assessment for runners or if you use running as part of your training. This will be useful for injury recovery, prevention as well as performance improvement. We are incorporating all our current biomechanical assessments but adding in new equipment. The increased size of the room allows space for a more through assessment and to offer rehabilitation treatment. Understanding how and why you move as you do is essential information. This will help explain ongoing injuries or struggling to improve your running.

A Bit More Info

This new clinic will offer one of the most advanced gait analysis and biomechanics assessments for runners in the area. The combination of experienced staff with a wealth of knowledge regarding human movement and cutting edge technology will provide running and movement assessments to fully assess how and why you move as you do. The assessments will uncover your biomechanical make up, your functional strength, how your body moves as a whole unit. The aim being to establish the link between your movement and injury or performance. Assessment is key to understanding why your body has become injured or you feel that you are not able to achieve your true potential. Whether walking or running we subject our bodies to a variety of loads and when we exceed the load our body can tolerate we become injured. Therefore if you know how and why you are loading your body you can take preventative measures when we find the areas of concern.

We are all different and if running you need a running specific assessment

Of course we are all different and we do not subscribe to a single approach. We look at all the data we collect and discuss with you what we feel is going on, what the link is between how your body works and how you feel. We can then look at how to make changes. Not everyone is going to get the same treatment, although there are themes that we see. We aim to identify and treat the root causes of the issues. We do look at short term symptoms, but we do need to address the underlying issues.

Information is key – you need to know how you move as you do

We will discuss with you your activity history, day to day activities, pervious injury(s) and goals for the future. Whether this is a big event or maintaining your daily activities these assessments will aim to get to the root cause of the issues you have and give you a good understanding of the issues and then how to deal with them.

Assessment Process

Assessments will include:

A detail discussion of the history of the issues, previous problems, daily activities, footwear, training, goals for the future, previous treatments and activities.

A thorough examination of the injured area and then a detailed examination of other areas of linked pain, movements, joints and muscles.

Footwear assessment

A standing and movement examination

Barefoot walking

Treadmill walking  / running

Outside running if appropriate

Video analysis of the above

Footscan Pressure Mat – walking and running (if required), with and without footwear

Baiobit Functional Assessment

Baiobit | Gait & Motion Technology Ltd | Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk (gaitandmotion.co.uk)

Once we have all of this information we will discuss with you what we think is injured and why this happened. We will go through all the assessment data with you at the time.

We will then discuss with you what we feel needs to happen to get you back injury free or performing at your best.

The Aim of the Treatment

For treatment to most effective there has to be a change in the way you are loading the damaged structures. This is key to to a quicker recovery and a long term solution to the problem. We often see people who have the same issue that keeps on coming back time after time. This is because the underlying cause has not been addressed. We shall discuss with you and explain how you are able to change the loading patterns that you are currently placing onto your body.

Treatment Options

Treatments could include a combination of a options and the timing of when best to do these will be explained. Or you could be lucky and we identify the one thing that sorts it out. Each treatment option that we feel would be beneficial will be discussed and an explanation of what you can expect.

Orthoses – custom or premade, a variety of options but we are now using 3D printing to allow for very precise prescription that is directly related to how you move

Rehabilitation exercises – what we feel you need to do and why

Running or walking gait changes – again a discussion of why and how to make these changes sustainable and not just short term

ICE, pain relief, strapping – all to address local pain

Sports Massage – can be useful for both treatment and prevention

Shockwave – we use shockwave to help bodies start to heal chronic injuries

Manual therapy – hands on therapy for pain relief and improvement of function

Pain discussion – how the body uses pain to protect you, what is good and bad pain

Reducing the damaging load – what do you need to change in the short term

Lifestyle and training activities that maybe having a detrimental effect and need to be managed

Breathing – how you breath can have a serious impact on the way you move

Nutrition – what you are eating on a daily basis or for training / racing could also be a factor

Bodies are brilliant at repairing themselves and we have to work with them and not against them. A short term change that seems frustrating at the time often makes for a quicker overall recovery with a healthier body at the end of it.
